Bookstore Mission

To serve as an educational resource for campus, integrating with the academic community to ensure the availability of materials necessary for development and to provide merchandise to enrich the sense of campus community. The Western AS Bookstore operates in a partnership with the Associated Students of Western Washington University for the benefit of all students. In doing so the store operates in an economically responsible manner keeping price on required materials as low as possible.

Our History

The space — and even our name — have changed a few times over the last 110 years, our core mission has not.

From the beginning, the Western A.S. Bookstore has adopted a student-centered mission, working in partnership with the Associated Students and Western’s faculty to keep required course materials and supplies accessible and affordable.

When the bookstore opened in 1910, the goal was not only to serve as a resource for textbooks, but also school supplies and other goods to support students and staff—something we still do to this day. Beyond textbooks, our store is stocked with general school supplies like notebooks, backpacks, and art supplies, along with emblematic apparel, local goods, fun gift items, snacks, and more.

The recent renovation of the Western A.S. Bookstore was part of a larger renovation that completed in 2019, with the Bookstore moving back into our space just before Fall quarter 2019. This reno was an addition to the project to create a new Multi-Cultural Center(MCC) attached to the student union building on campus, the Viking Union (VU). One of the primary drivers for the project was to create a prominent location for the MCC, highly visible from main campus, and to unify disparate portions of the Viking Union complex originally built in the 1960’s. The Bookstore was originally housed in a separate building from the Viking Union, and still felt disconnected from the complex even after several additions and renovations were completed over the years. The addition was built over and across an existing outdoor space in order to reorient the entrance to the Bookstore from a small, exterior entrance to a welcoming and open interior entrance. This change brings the Bookstore into the identity of the Viking Union as a whole.

We will continue to grow and evolve with the campus community and adapt to its changing needs. Thank you for supporting the A.S. Bookstore, an independent student store since 1910!
